Physical Intervention and Restraint Training

Course description

A 2 day course designed for those who may come into contact with violent and aggressive members of the public. It is not intended to replace the emergency services but is considered a last ditch attempt at self defence when all other none physical options have been exhausted.

Who is the course suitable for?

Anyone that is employed in a role that comes into contact with members of the public. To attend this course you must be free from illness and/or injury and able to participate in physical interactions with other candidates.

Candidates must have attended a 1 day conflict management course prior to attending this course, or able to demonstrate prior learning similar to the conflict management course content. (Candidates with disabilities/learning difficulties will be reviewed on application on whether the course is suitable).

What you will learn

This course covers: avoiding the use of force; using non-aggressive techniques; avoiding and protecting against assault; disengaging from an assailant; guiding and escorting; and hold & restraint.

Course includes
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Use of force / legislation / conflict management knowledge check
  • Stance and movement
  • Reactionary gap / defensive arc / clock positions
  • Contact and cover / signalling none aggression (open palms)
  • Passing the baton / switching
  • Ground fighting / ground defence
  • Assertive crisis communication strategies
  • Creating space
  • Strangle and neck releases
  • Break away and restraint techniques
  • Trauma chart (based on the monadnock expandable baton)
  • Pressure points / releases
  • Strikes
  • Handcuff / restraint training
  • The use and application of handcuffs to the front, the rear and prone
  • Conflict management model
  • Attitude and behaviour cycle
  • RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995) and use of force statements
Assessment and certification

Assessment is by attendance and formative assessment by the trainer.
